IEEE Oregon Power & Energy Society Chapter Meeting
Subject: LED Luminaires for Outdoor Applications Speaker: Mr. Jason Tuenge, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Time/Date : March 16, 2010 - 12:30 to 1:30 PM Location: Conference Room A&B - Third floor of 700 NE Multnomah Blvd - Portland, Oregon
Summary: Solid-State Lighting (SSL) products are increasingly viable for outdoor lighting applications. However, not all LED luminaires are created equal. The US Department of Energy (DOE) has created a number of market-based programs, including CALiPER and GATEWAY Demonstrations, to simultaneously reign-in and foster the introduction of this emerging technology. This presentation will provide guidance on the evaluation of LED luminaires for outdoor applications such as streets and parking lots, including examples comparing LED with induction and HID.
Biography: Jason Tuenge joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in 2008 as a Senior Lighting Engineer. He has ten years of work experience in the lighting industry, ranging from manufacturing to specification sales to software development and consulting. Jason earned his B.S. in Architectural Engineering at the University of Colorado and is both Lighting Certified (LC) and a LEED Accredited Professional. The current emphasis of his work is in support of the Department of Energy’s market-based programs for Solid-State Lighting. Jason developed a new performance metric, Fitted Target Efficacy (FTE), as part of the new draft ENERGY STAR criteria for LED roadway and parking lot luminaires, and he found a way to limit glare by correlating the new IES BUG rating system with the old “cutoff” classifications. He has performed a number of analyses for candidate GATEWAY projects, evaluating the suitability of the latest LED luminaires for applications including parking lots, streets, and even a tunnel.
The Portland chapter of PES meetings will be held every third Tuesday of the month. These Meetings will be held at the Lloyd 700 Building, 700 NE Multnomah Boulevard, third floor meeting room A&B. Meetings will start at 12:30 PM and will last for one hour. Also, attending these meetings can be used as equivalent to one PDH for members who need to keep up their professional engineering licenses. You may go to http://www.ieee-or.org/ site and select events for future PES meeting notices.
